Whitko Community Schools staff and students hosted Veterans Day events to say thank you to and honor military veterans.
On Friday, November 8, 2024, Pierceton Elementary School students offered a warm welcome to local veterans and community members who attended the Veterans Day program themed “Celebrating Our Heroes.” Guests were greeted at the door and veterans were given a uniquely crafted card. Patriotic art created by students was on display. Principal Christy Haupert welcomed everyone and shared the history of Veterans Day. Music teacher Tammy Sprunger led the students in singing patriotic songs and teacher MaryHelen Gensch read from “Hero Dad” and “Hero Mom” books. During the playing of an Armed Forces Medley, Veterans in attendance were asked to stand and be recognized when their branch song was played. Refreshments were served in the cafeteria following the program.
On Monday, November 11, 2024 South Whitley Elementary School students and local veterans paraded from the elementary school to the flagpole by the Eel RIver bridge where they were joined by community members. After a greeting by principal Joel Holsopple the program continued with the singing of The Star-Spangled Banner, reciting of The Pledge of Allegiance, and more flag waving and singing of patriotic songs by students. Sixth grade teacher and U.S. Army veteran Marc Green thanked veterans for the freedom we have today. Purple Heart recipients in attendance were recognized, followed by a flag folding ceremony. Students then provided a wreath to be placed by the flagpole and presented the local Amvets with a thank you banner. You’re a Grand Old Flag was sung by the entire student body and closing remarks were made by teacher Bill Rhodes before the patriotic parade continued through town.
Whitko Jr/Sr High School also hosted a Veterans Day program on November 11, 2024, for all junior and senior high school students. After a welcome by principal Jodie Clark, the South Whitley AmVets members presented the colors. Fred Taylor was guest speaker and a U.S. Army and Vietnam War veteran, a three-time Purple Heart recipient, and grandfather of Whitko students Alexa, Jillian, and Alayna Culp. Taylor continues a lifetime of advocacy on behalf of Veterans and encouraged the students to never give up in school and in life, no matter their circumstances. The Whitko band closed the program playing The Star-Spangled Banner.
